The only known miniature representing the trial for the annulment of the conviction of joan of arc. Isabelle rommée (kneeling and dressed in black) and her two sons (figured as young children) before the grand inquisitor of france, jean bréhal (from behind, in the foreground). Pope calixtus iii appears seated on the pontifical throne at the top of the composition, next to an (inspiring?) representation of the trinity. Playing an important role during the trial for the annulment of the conviction of joan of arc - a trial permitted by calixtus iii -, bréhal here seems to acquiesce to the petition of isabelle rommée and her two sons. On the left sit the apostolic commissioners appointed by the sovereign pontiff with a view to leading the nullity trial. The miniature adorns the manuscript of diane de poitiers written in the first half of the 16th century for the mistress of king henry ii, as well as this is attested by the dedicatory preface mentioning diane's father and grandfather. The manuscript is currently held in a private british collection. Date: 16th century.
