Studio of sir peter lely (soest 1618 - 1680 london) portrait of grace, lady castleton (1608-58), half-length, in a painted stone cartouche oil on canvas 75. 6 x 63. 1 cm.;29¾ x 24⅞ in. Grace belasyse was the daughter of henry belasyse (1604-47) and grace barton, daughter of sir thomas barton. Her eldest brother, thomas, inherited the title viscount fauconberg from his grandfather in 1652, and was created earl of fauconberg; he was ambassador to the princes of italy. Grace married george saunderson, 5th viscount castleton (1631-1714), who was elected member of parliament for lincolnshire and held the seat from 1661-98. Date: 17th century.
