iconographic description:
parody of a military magazine. The men reviewed are members of the government. In the right foreground is a porcupine ridden by a figure of a jester, the incarnation of the caricature. The porcupine is a forgotten emblem of the orléans family. Aping the national guard's magazines chanting the regime, pl. Parades the members of the government (deputies, magistrates, ministers, etc. ) in a procession, as well as all the active forces working to defend the regime in place (example: newspapers, etc. ), the “grotesque army of the just middle”. From right to left, among a crowd of unidentifiable people, are certain recognizable figures: the "provocateurs of june", the "decorated of the pont d'arcole", the prefect of the paris police henri gisquet on horseback and carrying a quiver of arrows on which can be read "police". He's actually upside down on his horse, which is heading in the opposite direction and has "common sense" written on the saddle. The pl. Denounces the absurdity of the repressive measures taken by the government which go against common sense. In the foreground is, among other things, the personification of the newspaper "moni // teur [moniteur]", an official organ of the government, in the form of a decorated man, mouth wide open declaiming the articles whose texts are written on a large sheet of paper attached to his back. Then comes lobau, carrying a clysthera syringe in his right hand, and placing his left hand on a purse bearing the inscription “wood // vert”. A man wearing a cap on which reads “[…]onstitution[…] [constitutional]”, thereby designating the newspaper. Parsley, dressed in his magistrate's clothes, holds a saw in the air (an allusion to censorship; father-saw, as he is nicknamed by la caricature). Right in front of him is dupin, richly dressed in an ermine cloak. He is holding a flag on which is written “arguments” under two heraldic representations. Behind him, “the presidents of the assize court and their leaded scales” (in explanation). Next is barthe, dressed as a minister of justice, holding the knife (the pl. Denounces with this accessory the censorship exercised on the press; it is also the knife of the state of siege). In front of him, seen from behind and turning his head, it is undoubtedly d'argout. Finally, at the head of the procession, a patrol ranged under a banner bearing the name "artillery // de siege" and bearing the motif of two crossed syringes (in connection with the repression with fire hoses in april 1831 set up by lobau). Finally, at the extreme left, “the security brigade established to protect citizens” (in explanation. Ironic way of designating the stunners, henchmen employed by the regime to hit rebellious citizens). In the background, on the left, behind a raised wooden fence are men playing various musical instruments and tapping on kitchen utensils. In the background we can see the dome of the tuileries, at the top of which the tricolor flag flies. Person / character depicted:
mouton, georges, count of lobau; dupin, andré marie jean-jacques (known as dupin elder); barthe, felix; argout, antoine maurice apollinaire d', baron; parsley, jean-charles
