iconographic description:
the jester of "the caricature" shoots lithographic pencils, like arrows, with his bow into the numerous heads of the lernaean hydra whose body is hidden behind columns and of which only one clawed paw can be seen. These heads have the features of members of the government: persil, recognizable by his saw-shaped nose and his magistrate's hat, soult just behind him, barthe, having received an arrow in the eye, d'argout hit in the nose, dupin, having received an arrow in the mouth, louis-philippe in the background of whom we can only make out the forelock and the sideburns. Finally, lobau below, and guizot, hit in the forehead. The tab is placed on gold coins and sheets bearing the titles “edit de // 1666” (these are ancien régime laws, such as these edicts of 1666 restricting the powers of parliament and reinforcing the king's control over access to the nobility), “etat […] [de] // sièg […] [siege]” (reference to the state of siege of 1832). Another paper, located under persil's head, bears an illegible inscription. At the foot of the jester in “la caricature” are copies of the newspapers “la caricature” and “le chariv […] [charivari]”. The scene takes place in what appears to be the interior courtyard of a palace, certainly the tuileries palace. The pl. Aims to highlight the perpetual battle waged by the opposition newspapers la caricature and le charivari against what they consider to be abuses by the government of the july monarchy.
