in 1847, william henry hunt exhibited two paintings of monks at the spring exhibition of the society of painters in watre-colours. This watercolor, which the artist entitled a hermit, was the larger of the two. The other, which one author incorrectly suggested might be a self-portrait, depicts the same model, standing, 3/4 length from the right side, holding a bible under his right arm, and looking toward the viewer. It is now in the collection of the victoria & albert museum in london, england.
