iconographic description:
in this scene, a mother gives her daughter's hand in marriage to a middle-aged man. On the left, the man with the head of an old shepherd dog bows and grabs the young girl's hand. He has a cane with a pommel under his arm, a sign of his age and certainly of his fortune. The young girl has the face of a lamb and seems sickly. Her mother, behind her, has the head of a wolf and is rubbing her hands. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "well! we are going to marry the contrasts. Marriage is the closed field where these enemies will meet, very close to coming to blows. Oh! the beautiful melee, the beautiful endless battle that this legal but anti-natural association will offer us, of water and fire, of white and black, of the young and the old! but, once again, what name does civilization give to this monstrous coupling civilization calls it a marriage of convenience. ”
