iconographic description:
a man wearing a cap stands near a river. He is fishing, his fishing rod in his hand. A wicker basket is placed on the ground. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "all great talents respect and understand true passions, they explain them to each other and find their roots in the heart or in the head. According to joseph, his brother loved tobacco and liqueurs, his old mother descoings loved dulls, his mother loved god, desroches son loved trials, desroches father loved angling, everything the world, he said, loved something” [excerpt from la rabouilleuse, by honoré de balzac]
