This is one of a series of closely related paintings sisley made in 1885 to record different views around saint-mammès, the port town where the loing canal, connecting the seine and saône rivers, flows into the seine. Sisley’s views of the area around the junction of river and canal concentrate on the luminosity of the vast sky and the wispy clouds rather than the low buildings and commercial barge traffic.
