composition in two sketches. On the right: two young women (grisettes) are sitting and chatting, while a man, also seated and in shirt sleeves, is polishing his boots. An elegant young man stands next to them. On the left: a young woman walking, turning her head to her right. She has a pelisse on her shoulders. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier contributed to illustrating la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "etienne lousteau had black pants, well-polished boots, a coat buttoned up to the neck; his shirt, which florine undoubtedly had to change for him, was hidden by a velvet collar, and he brushed his hat to make it look like new. -- let's leave, said lucien. -- not yet, i'm waiting for a bookseller to get some change, we might play. I don't have a farthing; besides, i need gloves. " [excerpt from lost illusions, by honoré de balzac]
