Samson threatening his father in law, Rembrandt, circa 1635

Samson threatening his father in law, Rembrandt, circa 1635

Curved sword with a golden handle, similar to an arabian saif, hangs from the cloth band around samson's waist. His hair, the source of his strength, is held in place by a jewelled headband. Two young black pages with kids, an important attribute of the samson story, accompany him. The light falls on the red beret of the one in front. In contrast to the berlin picture, the painting is in landscape format. The copy was originally also narrower. The addition on the left was made some time later, possibly by rembrandt himself, due to compositional or content-related considerations. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: circa 1635. Dimensions: height: 162.3 cm (63.8 in) ; width: 174.8 cm (68.8 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Depicted People: Samson. Collection: Natan Saban Collection, Israel.
