iconographic description:
five men are seated around a table. They are dressed in a bourgeois fashion: frock coats and jackets. They are represented with the heads of carnivorous or frightening animals: crocodile, conger eel, shark, rat and wild boar. One of them is about to uncork a bottle, another looks at his empty plate. The mouse man checks his watch while the last two guests brandish their knives. A chair remained empty. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "and during this time the soup already served cools, and the roast roasts beyond measure. They say that the wait is cruel when you are waiting for your sweetheart, but it is a hundred times more painful when it is a dinner party that you are waiting for, especially if the master of the house believes in the old sayings, and has made you sit at the table in the hope that this would make the latecomer arrive more quickly.
