The Multitude, Gebhard Fugel, 1933

From a series of 25 sketches for frescoes "pictures of revelation" (1933); this sketch based on revelation 7:9–17, depicting the multitude adoring the lamb (adoration of the lamb by the 144-thousand). Fugel often turned to revelation as a subject, and between 1917 and 1933 he created sketches for frescoes on the topic that are now in the collection of scheyern abbey. The series was included in a 1933 book on revelation (die apokalypse, oder, die offenbarung des hl. Johannes by prof. Jakob schäfer; see references) and illustrate the subject in a narrative fashion that stays close to the text. Date: 1933. Collection: Scheyern Abbey.
