Published by l'artiste in 1864, the year after the artist's death. This scene haunted bergeret's imagination. The etching was made in 1838, nearly 20 years after his painting of the same subject was exhibited at the salon de paris in 1819; there is a pen-and-ink drawing in the peabody art collection, maryland; the whereabouts of the painting are unknown.
