The kannerezed-noz (in breton, "night washerwomen" in french), these white women beat the linen of the dead in the moonlight as punishment for their sins, invited late travelers to twist the sheets to chain them to their own damnation (tale collected by émile souvestre in 1845 in the region of the penzé estuary).
