Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "here is the letter written for ursule: "dear ursule, there is a young man in nemours who idolizes you, he cannot see you working at your window without emotions which prove to him that his love is for life. This young man is gifted with an iron will and a perseverance that nothing discourages: therefore welcome his love, because he has only pure intentions and humbly asks for your hand, in the desire to make you happy. His fortune, although already decent, is nothing compared to that which he will make for you when you are his wife. You will one day be received at court as the wife of a minister and one of the first in the country. As he sees you every day, without you being able to see him, put one of bougival's pots of carnations on your window, you will have told him that. Can present itself. » ursule burned this letter without speaking to savinien.
