Venetian history – 126: 1668 – finally europe is moving too. The french arrive in candia “more than two thousand turks who were garrisoning the nearby trenches rose up, but once the rumor of the attack spread, they ran to the rescue from more distant places, and having directed their artillery in that direction, they wounded the french with every type of weapon. The duke walked intrepidly between fire and sword, explored every place, animated his people and provided for all their needs; and seeing a large body of the enemy approaching them who was about to cut off the road to return, the frankish duke commanded the retreat, and with very serious punishment he reduced his men safely under the walls". Date: 2 January 1863.
