Map from 1865 of the former municipality alkemade (province south holland, netherlands), about 8 km northeast of leiden. The municipality contained no village of that name. Alkemade existed since the introduction of municipalities as a form of local government in the netherlands (around 1812). In 1855 alkemade absorbed the small municipality vrije en lage boekhorst. On 1 january 2009 alkemade and jacobswoude merged to form the new municipality of kaag en braassem. (the municipality of jacobswoude had existed only 18 years; it was created in 1991 when the municipalities woubrugge, rijnsaterwoude en leimuiden merged). Date: 1865.
