Allegory on Dürer's virtues, Albrecht Dürer, 1522

Allegory on Dürer's virtues, Albrecht Dürer, 1522

Under a tree in front of a background consisting of a landscape and a tent camp, the armored albrecht dürer is fighting an opponent lying on the ground. Emperor maximilian i stands on the left edge of the picture. The robe of honor donated to the artist is taken out of a chest. In the background are three heroes of prehistoric times: hercules with the club for antiquity, david for the bible, the gothic king theodoric for modern times. Three female virtues stand opposite them: iustitia with the mural crown, fortitudo with the helmet and prudentia, prudence and wisdom. The program was probably designed by johann stabius, the advisor to maximilian i, who stands behind the emperor in the relief. Date: 1522. Place of creation: Augsburg. Dimensions: 23.8 × 16.8 × 3.2 cm (9.3 × 6.6 × 1.2 in). Medium: limestone. Collection: Bode Museum. Allegorical duel between Albrecht Durer and Apelles, by Hans Daucher, Augsburg, 1522, Solnhofen stone - Bode-Museum - DSC03006
