Finished drawing for pl 1 of "industry and idleness" (1747), "the fellow 'prentices at their looms"; interior of the weaver's workroom, to left, goodchild busy at his loom, to right, idle asleep at his, to extreme l, the master raising a cane, in the centre a spinning-wheel and a cat on its hindlegs, with additional objects including a tankard lettered "john [. . ] crown a[nd. . ] in spittle fields", a spinning wheel and spindle wound with silk thread; symbolic embellishments added to the margin, including the mace, the lord mayor's chain, fetters and halter brush drawing in grey wash, with pen and ink, over black chalk or graphite (?), indented for transfer.
