This panel, together with the "adoration of the shepherds" (me 1520) and the "resurrection of christ" (me 1522), forms the set painted by gregório lopes, in 1544, for the three altars of the church of bom jesus de valverde, commissioned by cardinal d. Henrique. Inside the church, this panel was on the main altar, the "adoration of the shepherds" on the epistle side and the "resurrection" on the gospel side as the panels were distributed according to a narrative sequence appropriate to the internal circulation of the space which, in the case of a greek cross plan formed by four octagons arranged symmetrically around a central octagon and with the entrance through the octagon facing the main altar, but through a side opening, in the direction of right to left and not in the opposite direction, as is more usual. By order of may 1929, from the minister of education, the director of the regional school of agriculture delivered the paintings to the évora museum on june 13 of that year.
