John iii
proven contemporary original portraits of johan iii are not known, either in oil or engraving, unless the copperplate shown here, or at least the prototype for the bust that exists there, may possibly be considered to have been created during the king's lifetime. There is an absolutely unmistakable resemblance to that profile picture of
him, who appears on the image of king johan's funeral procession engraved by hieronymus nützel m. M. As well as another, unpublished engraving by the same engraver, belonging to a page with images of gustaf i, erik, johan, sigismund and carl, probably intended for the title page. You can even find one in the first-mentioned picture
more youthful features, but as nützel was probably not in sweden until the same year johan died, 1592, one must assume that this image must have happened, even if, as often happened at this time, it is engraved after coin or medal types, whose similarity to the original can with all reason be doubted. Another possibility, however, is that nützel had access to older pictures of johan, because it seems beyond all doubt that the art-loving prince either in sweden or, for example, during his various trips abroad, had his facial features "immortalized". In addition, during johan's time there were several skilled artists here, who also made "conterfei"; such are: anders painter, lambrecht painter, willem boy, johan baptista van uther etc. Fl. Date: circa 1590. Medium: engraving.
