Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-04-28) letter no. 163 (1943-05-02) next letter (1943-05-05) as i already wrote to you, i had a lovely and good easter. Yesterday, on may 1st, i was at the front with the sergeants paying out money to the company and also went to my old platoon bunker. I was very happy; they didn't want to let me leave. Our "sergeant" was made staff sergeant and we celebrated in the orderly room that evening. Imagine, i was the only soldier with the first lieutenant, senior sergeant, sergeant and non-commissioned officers! it was very nice and i was praised by everyone and that rarely happens. For lunch there was roast and a wonderful pudding. Today i'm back in my "palace" the field is sleeping. I've heated it up. The weather is nice now, the sun is shining, but it will be cool again in the evening. Personally, i'm still doing fine, i can bear it here. There's nothing new, it's always the same old story. I've still got a bit of work to do. Thanks again for everything. Best wishes and kisses from your hansl. Ns i've attached two pictures to keep: our mailbox, and a bunker entrance from a reserve position. Date: 2 May 1943.
