29. 6 by 24. 4 cm.;11 3/4 by 9 3/4 in. Daniel gardner was a portrait painter in both pastel and oils. Born in kendal, cumbria, he received drawing lessons from george romney (1734-1802), before moving to london in 1762. He joined the royal academy schools in 1770 and won a silver metal for drawing in 1773. Despite a successful career he only exhibited once at the royal academy. In circa 1776 he married ann haward, with whom he had two children. Date: 18th century.
