iconographic description:
louis-philippe as an “indian” juggles on a platform. In the air, describing an arc above his head, from left. To the right: "public order" (a bayonet piercing a paper), "justice" (a dagger), "liberty", (a sphere balanced on a point resting on its nose), the "charter", "votes" (a ballot box), the economy (a stock exchange). The fall of these elements seems irremediable and the juggler appears nothing less than assured. The explanation specifies that it is a "juggler called "indian", like we see so many in our squares" but adds that unlike the others this one "is not very good at balancing". The representation of louis-philippe as a juggler "indian" refers to the popularity of exotic or pseudo-exotic attractions in the 19th century. It constitutes one of the formulas among others of the caricature of the king as acrobat, banker, tightrope walker, conjurer as the newspaper regularly offers. We must undoubtedly also compare this plate with the american stay made by louis-philippe in his youth, mentioned in the previous print published in the same issue: "honest reward granted in 1800 to louis-philippe d'orléans, surgeon and émigré, but still french, by not very delicate savages from north america". The franco-american crisis of 1834-1835 on the question of compensation claimed by the united states is undoubtedly not unrelated to the revival of this memory which offers caricaturists the opportunity for new variations and metamorphoses of the figure of the king. louis-philippe i, king of the french
