Theodorus-schrevelius, Jonas Suyderhoef, circa 1650

Theodor(us) schrevel(ius). Engraving by jonas suyderhoeff after a painting by the painter franz hals (1581-1666). The engraving depicts the humanist, writer, poet and headmaster of the haarlem latin school. Translation of the inscriptions: in the oval: "echthron adora dora" (greek): "gifts from enemies are no gifts". "theodorus schrevelius gymnasiarcha harlemensis" (latin): "theodor schrevel, headmaster in haarlem". Translation of the latin text below the portrait: "it was easy to have painted the man then, since my schrevel was painted by his strong age and face. It is more difficult to praise the old man now, to whom - phoebus' revenge - sad strangers gave a stiff head. He who taught everyone to live lives only for himself, and his tongue, eloquent in latin words, is silent. As in vain are the schools, so in vain are all the efforts; the old man’s grave asks those still living for rest. ”. Date: circa 1650. Medium: engraving.
