Feldpost von Hans 1943-04-09 2, 9 April 1943

Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-04-03) letter no. 153 (1943-04-09) next letter (1943-04-11) east, 9. 4. 43 my dear mum! i want to send you my heartfelt greetings again. I haven’t had any mail from you for three days now; there must have been a bit of a delay on the train. As you’ve probably already seen, i have a little treat for you. We took these photos in our old position in our winter clothing; they turned out really well, particularly the one where i’m running alone in the trench; i’ve had this one and the one where we’re standing in front of the bunker with our field caps enlarged! now i finally have a couple of pictures from russia; in the picture where we’re all guiding in the trench [???] i’m assuming from the second to last one; right at the back you can still see a piece of the barbed wire. The pictures will probably make you as happy as they did me. It is our platoon with 6 men, a sergeant major, a sergeant two messengers, a medic and another private. We have already handed in our winter clothes and are now wearing rubber boots. In the new position there is a lot of dirt and mud, the trenches are often full of water up to the top, but we never get wet feet! we often look like "pigs", but that passes. Otherwise it is very quiet here; every now and then the artillery fires. As you can see from the pictures, we all still look very good, right now we are singing the song "it shall all pass sometime". Let's hope that it will be like that soon. My cut has completely healed and i am feeling perfectly again. The service is not so difficult anymore either, the weather is quite nice, it is still freezing at night but during the day it thaws considerably, almost all the snow has disappeared. This month the first holiday cards arrived - imagine 3 for the whole company of 130 men! hopefully there will be more soon - it can't take too long for me either. Well, we'll wait and see and drink "tschei". How long has poldi been at home? has karl been on [holiday?]. Date: 9 April 1943.
