Intaglio engraving using the mezzotinto process (or mezzotint) after an oil portrait of lady cunliffe by john hoppner, representing her as sophia western, the heroine of fielding's successful novel "tom jones", published in 1749. This monochrome engraving represents a pretty, dreamy and elegant young woman, leaning against a window, arms crossed on the sill, head tilted to the left, long ash blond or powdered curls, light long-sleeved dress with a large neckline edged with lace, long scarf in fine fabric casually tied in the cutout, one side held in the left hand, large hat held in place by a ribbon passing under the chin. Date: 1784.
