Sphinx of Lanuvium

Marble sphinx, probably the base of a table, with the head of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. Sphinx statues were often funerary landmarks in their role as guardians of tombs. Roman period, circa 120-140 ad. C. , from monte cagnolo, on the outskirts of lanuvium, near rome, italy. Dimensions: 840mm x 800mm x 550mm. Gr 1805,0703. 40 (sculpture 1719). It belongs to the exhibition the beauty of the body, at the marq. It is part of the permanent exhibition of the british museum. Collection: British Museum.
