He stands with his hands at his waist, his back arched and is dressed in a doublet and hose. He is one of the central characters of the novel published in 1831: abandoned by his parents at the age of 4 because of his physical deformities (hunchback, one-eyed and lame), he is taken in by the archdeacon claude frollo and becomes the ringer of the bells of notre-dame (which makes him deaf). He also falls in love with the beautiful gypsy esmeralda who prefers the officer phoebus.
