. . . Around 1875, monet painted a series of views of sailboats at anchor in the argenteuil basin. Only the framing and arrangement of the boats vary from one canvas to another. In the orangerie version, the vermilion red shells are featured in the center of the composition. They form a dazzling contrast with the complementary blue of the sky and water and the green of the vegetation floating on the surface of the seine. Everything is punctuated by the white touches of the sails and the ultramarine touches of the hulls on the left and the shimmer of the river.
