marie laurent in the role of la sachette for the performance of "notre-dame de paris" (published in 1831) at the théâtre des nations, june 7, 1879. She is seated on the floor, her hands placed on her knees and dressed in rags. Also called the recluse, or pâquette, she is unknowingly the mother of esméralda who was taken from her by gypsies when she was one year old and exchanged by quasimodo.
