Peter the great at coll de panissars. Oil on canvas. Museum of the history of catalonia. Barcelona catalonia details:
the painting presents one of the historical events that took place during the reign of peter ii the great: the battle of coll de panissars (september 30 and october 1, 1285), a conflict that put an end to the crusade declared by pope martin iv in 1283 against peter the great for his intervention in sicilian affairs. The croatian army, made up of troops from the kingdom of france, the kingdom of mallorca and the republic of genoa, was severely attacked by the troops of peter ii the great while they were preparing their retreat to the north of the pyrenees after having been defeated off the coast of the empordà by the catalan army. The scene of the play captures the moment when king peter orders the almogavers to stop the attacks to let the french king, philip iii, who is dying, retreat with the remnants of his army on the way to france. With the image of canigó in the background, king peter appears in the foreground on horseback accompanied by his troops. The horse steps on a torn banner, with the fleur-de-lis, emblem of the anjou family. On the left side of the scene is the group of almogàvers, with their unique clothing: shirt, leggings, avarques and sarró. Painting with historical themes was a very popular genre from the 1940s onwards in catalonia, the result of the project to recover cultural and national identity promoted by the renaissance movement. The intellectuals of this movement claim the medieval past as the historical moment in which catalonia had enjoyed a real political personality. The figure of peter the great will be the object of veneration for the fact that he represents the consolidation of the territorial expansion initiated by his father james i, and the strengthening of the government institutions: the courts and the council of cent. Object Type: painting. Date: 1866. Collection: Museum of the History of Catalonia. Pere el Gran al Coll de Panissars
