The allegorical painting of haestars is the only 17th-century picture with a cannon in 17th-century dutch painting, comparable to a late depiction of the blauhoofd bastion by ludolf bakhuizen (tefaf 2020 bijl-van urk). Maurice of orange had only planned four types of cannon around 1620, including a half-cartridge, as here, and also a 24-pounder. A soldier in roman-antique armor with a halberd stands behind the cannon, behind him are people dressed in oriental clothing. A woman with a turban rides on a donkey, and the mother and child also wear a turban. In front of her lie a ceremonial sword of the ghanaian ashanti and an asian saddle. The militaria in the foreground are european. The halberdier could be the gun founder coenraet wegewaert from the hague. (coll. Hoogsteder museum stichting, the hague). Date: ca. 1640/45. Dimensions: height: 50 cm (19.6 in); width: 68.5 cm (26.9 in). Medium: panel. Collection: Hoogsteder Museum Foundation; nl:Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder.
