Early britons (probably anglo-saxons) holding a trial in a clearing between trees; at centre, a dead body on a stretcher with a woman weeping over it and a young man angrily pointing to the accused, who stands with hands tied behind to left, between two guards; the jury, twelve men sitting at right, react thoughtfully; at left, on a raised throne, the judge, holding a long staff topped by a hand in a blessing gesture, below him, two men seated on blocks, one holding a book; after the cartoon by cope submitted to the westminster hall exhibition of 1843. 1847 lithograph on chine collé.
