Nero in circus, Wilhelm Peters, 2 January 1900

Nero in circus, Wilhelm Peters, 2 January 1900

The thumb as a mirror of compassion: nero's downward-pointing thumb signaled "no compassion" to the gladiators in the arena - in contrast to the upward-pointing thumb ("mercy"), which to this day signals "sympathetic joy". Crossing your fingers is also an expression of feeling/fearing for someone. Date: 2 January 1900. „Nero im Circus“
