Apelles surrounded by the graces. Johann georg hiltensperger (1806-1890). Wall panel, 1845-1848. No. Lviii. St. Petersburg, the state hermitage museum, gallery of the history of ancient painting, 58. Description: lviii. (in the dome). Apelles was distinguished from his contemporaries by his grace, or elegance, “which the greeks call charis, in which he has no equal” (pliny, xxxv, 79). Hiltensperger tries to convey this quality of apelles’s work in the form of allegories: the artist is surrounded by the graces, one of whom holds his painting, and the other guides his hand with a brush. Date: 1845—1848 гг..
