Tabula Cebetis B, woodcut after Hans Holbein the Younger, 1521

Tabula cebetis b. Woodcut, kunstmuseum basel. The tabula cebetis was a panel at a sanctuary of chronos, explained in a dialogue attributed to cebes, a student of socrates. The panel set out the path living people must follow to achieve true character, interpreted here as beatitude (christian rümelin, in müller et al, p. 491). The original metalcut, called cebes tablet a, was the source for three variants, including this one, in which holbein himself was probably not directly involved. Date: 1521.
