Charles rennie mackintosh (1868-1928) was a glasgow-born architect, painter and designer who is considered one of the main precursors of the modern movement. With margaret macdonald, who became his wife in 1900, his friend herbert mcnair and his wife frances macdonald, margaret's sister, all from the "glasgow school of art", he formed a group of very innovative artists for the time called "the four", influenced by art nouveau, symbolism and the english "arts and crafts" movement.
