Johann rudolf schellenberg: plate ix of basedow's elementary work (1774; 2nd edition 1785). – 1. Tiger on a chain, "aurochs or buffalo", mule, deer. (basedow 1785, pp. 279-280. ) – 2. A man looks at a caterpillar through a magnifying glass. Ostrich, "rhinoceros or rhinoceros", sawfish, "crocodile"; flock of migratory birds. (pp. 280-283. ) – 3. A dove feeds its young; a stork's nest on the church tower. A "marsupial or philander" carries its young in its pouch, "aeneas" carries them on his back [like the trojan hero his father anchises]. Tortoise. (p. 283-284. ) – 4. Attack and defense of animals: oxen defend themselves against a bear, horses against wolves. Porcupine. (p. 284-285. ). Date: 1784.
