In the winter of 1852 watkins went to new york via panama to deliver goods to huntington, hammond and company. He returned with a full load of goods on the ss michael angelo, which traveled around cape horn, stopping in chile, peru, panama, and mexico--a trip that took almost six months. Watkins may have taken this image of valparaíso in may or june 1852. In the image you can see the tower of the city's mayor's office, next to the l' union, english hotel and hotel paris hotels, on cochrane street, below to the right of the mayor's office. The fire brigade building had not yet been built (the first valparaíso fire brigade building was in the current plaza echaurren), nor was the valparaíso commercial exchange building, which will be located at the entrance to the dock. The monument to the heroes of iquique will be located a few meters before the beginning of the pier, while the current twin towers of the port of valparaíso, as well as the entire port, and the avenues brasil (originally called gran avenida), errazuriz and the bordemar, will be located to the right of the daguerreotype, in the sea. Date: 1852.
