He stands with his legs apart, his back arched and his bust leaning forward in a posture of astonishment, dressed in a doublet and breeches. He is one of the central characters of the novel published in 1831: abandoned and exchanged for little agnès (esmeralda) by his bohemian parents at the age of 4 because of his physical deformities (hunchback, one-eyed and lame), he is taken in by the archdeacon claude frollo and becomes the ringer of the bells of notre-dame (which makes him deaf). He also falls in love with the beautiful gypsy who prefers the officer phoebus. After being handed over to justice by a jealous frollo and furious at having been rejected, esmeralda is hanged at place de grève. Quasimodo, who sees the scene from the top of the cathedral towers, throws claude frollo into the void. Themes / subjects / places represented: portrait (subject represented), notre-dame de paris (v. Hugo) person / character depicted: lacressionnière (born charles adrien lesot de la penneterie); quasimodo (literary character) institution: maison de victor hugo - hauteville house inventory number: 3997. Date: 06–1879.
