Evening, After a Push Art.IWMART1210, Colin Gill

Evening, after a push image: the original line, which the advancing army leaves behind in its forward movement, remains desolate and encumbered with the debris of battle. A dead german soldier lies at the foot of a smashed tree trunk while british soldiers holding rifles stride past across ground that has been taken in the `push'. The figures are silhouetted against the evening sky, while the beam of a searchlight above their heads adds to the sense of dynamic, purposeful movement. Barrage balloons and clouds hover in the sky, giving a contrasting feeling of beauty and stillness. Date: 1919 (First World War).
