Portrait of dmitry ivanovich buturlin. Dmitry ivanovich buturlin (1703–1790) was a collegiate assessor, an exemplary landowner, a thrifty landowner, and the owner of the famous village of palekh in the vladimir province. His portrait, as well as the portrait of his wife, a. V. Buturlina, were painted by a. P. Antropov during the heyday of his creative activity. Simplicity, modesty, and inner significance define the image created by the artist. An energetic face with large features, a lively gaze directed straight at the viewer, reflect the clear natural mind of this man, his ability to make independent judgments, and his strength of character. The portrait was painted in the second half of the artist’s life, when his work is characterized by laconicism and generalization of expressive means – composition, color, lines, and volumes. The deep blue color of buturlin's costume is enlivened by a light ornamental pattern, treated still flatly and conventionally: the connection with the traditions of the 17th century parsuna was quite noticeable in antropov. The portrait of d. I. Buturlin is a pair to the portrait of a. V. Buturlina. Object Type: painting. Date: 1763. Dimensions: height: 60.9 cm (23.9 in); width: 47.7 cm (18.7 in). Medium: oil on canvas.
