Probably the portrait of abdullah efendi (1680?–1743). This clergyman of greek descent was working at the court from 1718 as shaykh al-islām and was deposed after the revolution of 1730. He was exiled, but returned to istanbul in silence, where he died in 1743. Abdullah owned a large collection of legal and religious documents and was instrumental in the introduction of the printing press in the ottoman empire. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait.
