The work represents the moment in which the head of the prophet saint john the baptist, who was beheaded by order of king herod antipas, was delivered on a tray to salome, who then, and as reported in the holy gospels, gave it to her mother, queen herodias, with the disciples of john the baptist being the ones who buried the rest of his body.
