Iconographic description: ernest coquelin, known as coquelin cadet (1848-1909), member of the comédie-française in the role of don bazile in beaumarchais' "barber of seville". Historical commentary: ernest coquelin, known as coquelin cadet (boulogne-sur-mer, 1848; suresnes, 1909) won the first prize for comedy at the conservatory in 1867 and was hired at the odéon. He then moved to the comédie-française, played at the variétés (1875-1876) and returned in 1876 to the comédie-française where he was accepted as a member in 1879, a time contemporary with gabriel ferrier's painting. With his caricatured acting, secondary roles suited him better. Ernest coquelin's brother, constant coquelin, known as cocquelin the elder (1841-1909), was also an actor at the comédie-française from 1860, but is especially famous for the triumph he won in the role of cyrano de bergerac by edmond rostand. The painting from the carnavalet museum is mounted in a frame with several other portraits of members of the comédie-française (painted by different painters) in their stage costume in the 1870s-1880s. Ferrier painted several of these actors in the years 1880-1890, twelve of which are kept at the carnavalet museum.
