Daphnis and Chloe or The Cicada, Pierre-Paul Prud'hon, 1808

The subject is taken from the greek novel of longus written in the 2nd or 3rd century and translated by amyot in the 16th century. Longus was inspired by greek bucolic poetry and the idylls of theocritus. Daphnis, a young goatherd, falls in love with the shepherdess chloé. However, a thousand obstacles stand between them.
