The roman goddess portrayed is occasio, like kairos, with whose attributes holbein invests her, a goddess of opportunity. The greek motto translates: "in all things it is best to take advantage of the right time". Holbein here uses decorative motifs familiar from his previous work, such as the squat columns that appear in his portraits of jakob and dorothea mayer and the segmented arch border (christian rümelin, in müller et al, p. 491).
