There are more than ten copies of this portrait type of philip the good, duke of burgundy. It shows the bust portrait of the duke in a black robe with a fur collar, the necklace of the golden fleece and a scroll in his hands. On his head he wears the chaperon, the typical burgundian headgear. It is generally assumed that the prototype of the bruges portrait was painted by rogier van der weyden. However, the poorly stylized hands with the scroll, the chain of the golden fleece, the position of the forearm along the edge of the painting, the rounded shoulders and the more stocky proportions are more reminiscent of jan van eyck.
