Bentivoglio Altarpiece, Lorenzo Costa, 1488

Images of the bentivoglios // the bentivoglio family in the fresco by lorenzo costa (bologna, church of san giacomo, bentivoglio chapel) 1. Ginevra bentivoglio 2. John ii 3. Camilla 4. Eleanor 5. Isolde 6. Laura 7. Violante 8. Francesca 9. White 10. Hannibal 11. Antongaleazzo 12. Alexander 13. Hermes john and ginevra had 16 children. Of them, five died at an early age. Among those portrayed in the fresco, we remember that camilla and isolde were nuns in the corpus domini convent. Francesca, married to galeotto manfredi, had murdered her husband just a few months ago at the time the fresco was created (august 1488). As for the sons, ermes, who was still a child in 1588, was described by a bolognese chronicler as irascible and perverse, even "bestial", perhaps in reference to the massacre he committed in 1501 against the marescotti family. Antongaleazzo, portrayed in the dress of a prelate, had the title of apostolic prothonotary. He, like the entire bentivoglio family, would have liked to obtain the cardinal's hat, an honor which the pope refused him. Finally, hannibal, with that hand on his hip and the splendid robe, appears in a proud and self-confident attitude (on the contrary, his father is strangely shy and uncertain). At the time of costa's fresco he had just married lucrezia d'este. After the death of john ii and the exile suffered by his family, it was he who attempted, together with his brother ermes, to return to bologna. However, once all hope of taking back the government of the city had faded, he moved permanently to ferrara where his lineage began. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: 1488. Medium: oil on canvas. Depicted People: Virgin Mary, Christ Child. Collection: San Giacomo Maggiore. Lorenzo Costa 006
